Yates Field House at the Burleith Picnic

On June 18th, Yates Field House joined the Burleith Citizens Association at the annual Summer Burleith Picnic. Yates shared a presentation table with Georgetown University, where picnic attendees had the opportunity to decorate cookies, spin a prize wheel, and learn about the many offerings that Yates provides for members of the community.

The picnic featured many organizations from the Georgetown area, as well as BBQ and live music. Several families joined in on the fun, playing cornhole, participating in raffles, and enjoying time spent in the Georgetown area community.

The picnic took place on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Whitehaven Park. We had a great time with our neighbors from Burleith and look forward to joining again next time!

Local Boy Scout Troop Practices Their Swimming Skills at Yates

Boy Scout Troop 666 from Glover Park used the Yates pool last Thursday for some swim practice and aquatic fun.

With the summer months approaching, the scouts needed to clarify that they are competent swimmers before getting ready for Summer Camp. The group will be attending Camp Rodney on the Chesapeake where they will be participating in several water activities.

During their evening at Yates, 15 scouts demonstrated and learned important water safety skills. They completed tasks such as jumping into water deeper than their height, swimming 75 yards, and treading water for three minutes.

The name of Troop 666 goes back about 80 years. Once upon a time The troop met in the basement of a local pharmacy and a popular medicine was named 666. Thus, the troop number was founded.

We hope you had a great time discovering your swimming ability at Yates, Troop 666!

Yates Field House Hosts MBA Basketball Tournament Benefiting Local Charity

This President’s Day weekend, Yates Field House hosted the Ultimate 4 MBA basketball tournament put on by Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business MBA program. The tournament brought together teams from MBA programs across the country for a chance to play to raise money for a local charity. This year the proceeds went to Horton’s Kids, a community-based organization that provides educational and need-based support to children aged K-12 in D.C.’s Ward 8.

This year celebrated the MBA tournament’s 28th anniversary. The universities that came out to represent their MBA programs included:

  • Georgetown University – McDonough School of Business
  • Northwestern University – Kellogg School of Management
  • Vanderbilt University – Owen Graduate School of Management
  • University of Maryland – Smith School of Business
  • Carnegie Mellon University – Tepper School of Business
  • University of North Carolina – Kenan–Flagler Business School
  • Duke University – Fuqua School of Business
  • University of Pennsylvania – The Wharton School
  • University of Chicago – Booth School of Business
  • Johns Hopkins University – Carey Business School

The “Final Four” featured Duke, Northwestern, Chicago, and Penn. The final game came down to Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business against Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, with the Kellogg School beating the Fuqua School for the championship.

Congrats to the winners: Northwestern University
Final game: Northwestern v. Duke

In recent years the tournament has been played to raise money for youth education programs. Horton’s Kids, the charity supported by this year’s tournament, is a local organization that serves children in Wellington Park in Ward 8, one of Washington D.C.’s most at-risk neighborhoods. By providing academic support, enrichment, character development, and health and basic needs, Horton’s Kids gives students the tools they need to succeed. Many current Horton’s Kids have improved their reading scores, enrolled in high-performing high schools, or are on track for on-time high school graduation. The high school graduation rate of a Horton’s Kid is nearly twice the neighborhood average. Learn more at www.hortonskids.org.

National Recreation Day 2016 Recap

On Friday, February 5, 2016, Yates Field House successfully celebrated National Recreation Day with a variety of fitness and entertainment events. Students, faculty, staff, and other Yates members were able to participate in group fitness classes, cornhole, Battleship, Log Rolling, and more. Check out our feature video of the events below.

During the event, Yates members were able to work out to their favorite tunes from a live DJ. Yates also served pizza as a post-workout snack.

National Recreation Day's Battleship champions
Congrats to the winning Battleship team, First Order!

The day wrapped up in the evening with Log Rolling and a Battleship tournament. After a long and hard fight from many student teams, Battleship team “First Order” took home the championship! Many other students enjoyed testing their skills in Log Rolling while the tournament was in progress.

Thanks to all for coming out to celebrate National Recreation Day. Yates encourages members to keep staying active throughout the year… and gear up for Rec Day 2017!
